Britain opens a £100 million route into public services

The government has launched the first four procurement competitions under its £100 million Sovereign AI R&D Procurement Scheme. British AI companies can compete to build demonstrator-stage technology for NHS productivity, compute efficiency, defence integration and the security testing of AI agents.

The structure matters as much as the headline fund. Successful companies can receive upfront payments where appropriate and keep the intellectual property they create. That is designed to help smaller firms cross the gap between a working prototype and a proven public-sector customer without needing the balance sheet of a large supplier.

The scheme is not a general grant and an announcement is not a contract. Applications will be judged against published competition criteria by the Sovereign AI team, participating departments and independent technical experts. Still, using government as an early customer is a better test of sovereign AI policy than another strategy document.

UKRI puts £17 million behind AI, supercomputing and quantum workflows

UK Research and Innovation has opened a £17 million funding opportunity for projects that integrate quantum computing with high-performance computing and AI. Projects must centre quantum computing, address a defined use case and involve an end-user.

The full economic cost of a project can be up to £3.75 million, with EPSRC funding 80%. Projects can run for up to three years from a fixed start date of 1 June 2027. The call opens on 4 September at 9:00am and closes on 3 November 2026 at 4:00pm UK time.

UKRI expects demonstrators showing where hybrid quantum-classical workflows offer a meaningful advantage. It also requires at least one-to-one leverage from public or private funding across each project's lifetime.

ChatGPT enters the EU's strictest online-service tier

The European Commission has designated ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act. Reddit and Roblox were designated as Very Large Online Platforms in the same decision.

Each service declared at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU. The designation gives them four months, until January 2027, to meet additional obligations including systemic-risk assessment and mitigation covering illegal content, minors, wellbeing, fundamental rights, elections and public security.

The decision does not find that ChatGPT has breached the law. It moves the service into the Commission's enhanced supervision regime and starts a defined compliance period.

Britain becomes Ukraine's first international AI Labs partner

The UK and Ukraine have signed an AI partnership focused initially on defence and national security.

Britain will become the first international partner with access to Ukraine's Avengers AI Labs. Its dataset contains around five million annotated battlefield images gathered from cameras and sensors, including data on drones, artillery, vehicles and other military targets.

British researchers, engineers, universities and technology companies will be brought into joint projects. Early work includes AI-enabled fibre-optic sensors for protecting infrastructure and research into low-power AI chips for drones and autonomous systems.

For the UK AI sector, the interesting part goes beyond defence spending. Britain is getting access to a kind of real-world training data that cannot simply be bought or scraped from the internet.
